Post-Winter Pick-Me-Up for Your Lawn

We're right there with you when it comes to dreaming for spring. The Northeast winter has been long, cold and hard and we're positive your front yard feels no different than we do.

Give your greens a little post-winter pick-me-up with these few landscaping tips from networx:

Aerate and dethatch you lawn. This promotes oxygen penetration and healthy growth. Reseeding or repair of turf may also be needed in bald spots.

Remove injured bark form trees. Use a sterile knife to cut off bark that has been damaged from sunscald and frost cracking. Leave the wound open and exposed to air for quick healing.

Care for plants. Other than renewing your mulch every year or two there are a few things you can do to your garden directly when the weather begins to warm. First, apply gypsum to remove excess salt from frost damage and trim brown or spongy parts from perennials.

Mend fencing and other hardscape. Nature is not the only thing that takes a beating through the harsh of winter. For help with missing posts, rust, or other fencing repair needs, give our experts at Fence Factory of CT and NY a call.

Picket Fence: Yay or Nay?

There's no denying that the classic white picket fence is a home border staple signifying the American dream. Giving any property a quaint look, this fencing style is still popular among many. Are you one of them?

Today picket fences can come in vinyl or wood and can be many different colors. While cedar wood provides a natural look and can easily be painted, vinyl can give you the same beloved look with half the maintenance (and for a tad higher cost).

A few other factors homeowners installing a picket fence have to address include fence style, picket style and height. Though picket fences are known for their shortness, options still range anywhere from 3 to 5 feet. At the same time, all pickets can either be equal height or vary throughout the length of your fencing.

#TuesdayTips Feng Shui Your Backyard

Fence Factory, Feng Shui

We know you can't see it, and you definitely can't feel it, but spring time is actually creeping closer than you might think!

Get excited with a few fun ways you can add Feng Shui to your backyard. Allow this spring to be a special and peaceful one.

Protect your backyard from negative environmental impact through either a natural or man-made barrier. While natural barriers can reduce noise and winds (such as large rocks, stone walls or tall bushes) adding in a fence can be a functional piece of security and comfort.

Create open spaces to promote the flow of energy. This, along with the presence of water, are important aspects of the Feng Shui experience. A small pond or waterfall are simple ways to achieve all three elements of Feng Shui - which are water, rocks and plants.

A few more things to keep in mind include the following:
  • Large trees should not be planted close to the house, as they trap energy.
  • Plants should add both color and aroma to the yard.
  • Patio accessories such as wind chimes and murmuring water can create a relaxing and pleasant environment.

Aluminum & Steel Fence Repair Guide

If your looking for a fence that could last you awhile, you're probably going to go with aluminum or steel. To prepare you for potential problems and repair needs ahead of time, we're outlining a quick aluminum and steel fence guide below:

Especially if you live in a rainy climate, a steel fence will eventually rust. The best solution is brushing on new paint, however, spray paint will also do the trick.

If a steel fence becomes bent, twisted or damaged, you can probably hammer it right back into shape. For an aluminum fence, however, you might need to completely replace that damaged section.

Many people choose steel or aluminum if they are going to implement a gate. When a gate becomes stiff and doesn't swing open freely, you can lubricate the moving parts. If it continues to happen anyway, you might want to replace the hinges and latches.

Remember that a great benefit of aluminum and steel is that their washable. Therefore, if your fence becomes stained or grimy, you can clean it right up with detergent and warm water.
